While on South 1st, I had breakfast at Polvos Mexican Restaurant. This is an awesome spot to enjoy interior Mexican food and drinks. They have a corner area for cooking up fresh tortillas and a nice salsa bar. My breakfast of choice today was the Trash Can Plate – “two scrambled eggs mixed with Bacon, Ham, Potatoes, Cheese, Pico de Gallo, Spinach, Sausage, Mushrooms, Chipotle, Machacado, and Chorizo. Served with Beans and Potatoes.” Totally yummy! π

Secret Oktober
Secret Oktober is a cool shop on South 1st Street. I stopped by to pick up a ticket for an event tonight. The store features “Goth, Steampunk, Industrial, Punk, Alternative & β80β²s”. It is the place to be for dresses with skulls and other groovy stuff.
After Rain
In my world, it has been raining for two days straight. This is mostly awesome, unless the heavy rains try their best to wake you up in the middle of the night. Luckily, one of my super powers is sleeping.
As a result of the heavy rains, the San Gabriel River is flowing strongly. While walking this evening, I took a few photos to give you an idea of what things looked like. I will also leave you with a quote to think about.
Virunga
I watched the documentary called Virunga last night, and really liked the film. Virunga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The park is managed by the Congolese National Park Authorities, the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN), and the movie tells a little bit of their story. According to Wikipedia, “the park was created in 1925 by King Albert I of Belgium as the first national park on the continent of Africa. It was founded primarily to protect the mountain gorillas living in the forests of the Virunga Mountains…” So naturally, the mountain gorillas play a big part in the movie too.
I most appreciated the story of the caretaker of orphaned gorillas. One of the park rangers, however, has my favorite quote from the film.
“All that could happen to me…”
“I will accept it.”
“I am not special.”
Short N Sweet Cafe
What to do on a rainy day in Austin? How about some Bubble Tea? Short N Sweet Cafe is a good place to chill and get your Bubble Tea on. They have three sizes of drinks, Short, Sweet, and Big Boy. I typically order the almond milk tea with pearls, but as you can see they have plenty of choices. Yay, Bubble Tea!
Samaras
I liked the following description from the Native Plant Society of Texas (I hope I have the correct tree).
“The fruits are flat, circular and papery wafer-like samaras. They occur in drooping clusters, are retained well into winter and wave in the wind with an audible rattle.”
The samara has a flattened wing of papery tissue that allows the wind to carry the seed. As it turns out, it also allows for nice photos at sunset near the 3/4 mile marker on some walking path. π
SiriusXM
So back in October when I got a new (to me) vehicle, it came equipped with a Sirius Satellite Radio. I was given a trial subscription, and all was good. Here are some of my favorite channels.
- 52 “Electric Area” – Bigroom House & DJ Mixes
- 51 “BPM” – Dance Hits
- 122 “NPR Now” – NPR News & Conversation
- 125 “SiriusXM Patriot” – Conservative Talk
- 126 “SiriusXM Urban View” – African-American Talk
As you can tell, I like EDM and talk radio the most. Some other channels are cool also. On long road trips, I just flip through all the music, lingering on a channel for a few songs and then moving to the next musical genre so I can stay awake.
My trial subscription is done and I found a deal where you pay six dollars a month for six months. That’s cool, but after that it goes up to something like 18 dollars a month – that’s not cool. For that kind of money I could buy about ten songs a month, and make my own radio station on the iPod touch. Oh well, I’ll worry about that in July. For now you will see me rocking out to EDM or nerding out to Talk Radio as I cruise through Texas with a few dollars less to spend on Slurpees and stuff.

Galaxy Cafe
My breakfast today while walking around the Clarksville Historic District was at Galaxy Cafe. I selected the build your own breakfast wrap, and my three ingredients of choice were Canadian bacon, potatoes, and baby spinach. This place is pretty yummy.
