Shining Hope for Communities

Yes, my Periscope addiction is ongoing.  So now on the Periscope App where you can see the videos from individuals you are following, the Periscope people have begun posting recommended videos that remain for viewing for about 24 hours.  I watched one of the best this morning.  It was from journalist Nick Kristof, who had invited Eunice Akoth (a sixth grade student from the settlement of Kibera in Kenya, Africa) to visit him in New York.  The short, live video showed a brief interview and a performance of a poem by Eunice.  The poem is extremely moving, and can be found here along with several other stories about day to day life in Kibera.  Kibera is Africa’s largest slum where daily challenges can include basic needs like food, water, and shelter.  Shining Hope for Communities is an organization working to help this settlement, and their mission statement can be seen below in a screenshot from their website.  At the very least, you should check out the poem from Eunice.  If you are like me, it will inspire you to learn more about her story and the people who have reached out to assist her and the community she lives in.

More Red

I am motoring around the Round Rock Outlet Mall today.  As usual, I hit up the Starbucks, this time for an iced green tea and some internets.  There is more red in the beautiful blooming rose bushes outside then you would imagine possible.  On the inside, they are playing music I’ve never heard before and one groovy lyric stuck with me.

“You can dance in a hurricane, but only if you’re standing in the eye.”

The YouTube video of the song “Eye” by Brandi Carlile is linked below if you want to give it a listen.

Kimberly Freeman

I tried to assemble a collection of three YouTube videos that would give you an idea of how talented Kimberly Freeman is (from One-Eyed Doll fame).  The first video is the official music video for the song “You’re a Vampire” and it shows how fun and quirky the band can be.  The second video is an acapella version of the song “New Orleans” which is just awesome.  And, the third video is a Promo film from 2011 that will give you a small taste of what one of her live shows will be like if you decide to get out and see her on tour (beware the language in this one).  I hope you like her music and that this will tempt you to explore her website or her YouTube channel a little further.

ZHU – Faded

I was a little bored in the coffee shop this afternoon while slurping on my white mocha, so I decided to check out the list of GRAMMY Award Winners and Nominees to see if there was any good EDM inspiration. I think the song “Faded” by ZHU was one of my favorite dance tracks. Here is the original song along with some remixes.

“Baby, I’m wasted. All I wanna do is drive home to you.”
