Pelon’s Tex-Mex Restaurant

My afternoon plans were to attend the “Quesoff” at the Mohawk in downtown Austin.  These plans were squashed when I showed up about thirty minutes early and the line went down the block and wrapped up the hill from there with no end in sight.  Apparently, queso contests are extremely popular on beautiful sunny days in Austin.  So, instead, I checked into Pelon’s for some brunch.  This place is nice with a gorgeuos deck and groovy air-conditioned interior.  The food needs a little work, but the location is perfect and the staff was great.  See you next year, queso judging party!

Jefferson Davis

IMG_4984

In the shadow of the Texas Tower on the campus of The University of Texas, stands a statue of Jefferson Davis.  This statue is in the news lately, as it was vandalized in June and is under consideration for removal from campus.  There are several statues at UT, including four of Confederate Leaders.  At the very least, it is interesting how these statues were chosen to be placed on campus, and at the very worst, they represent very racist and slave owning individuals from our past.  I won’t decide if the statues should stay or not, but leave that decision up to the University.  I will leave you with a set of photos from this afternoon of the Jefferson Davis statue (clear of graffiti) and the Tower.

Art*o*mat

IMG_4867

It is raining off and on in Austin today, so I find myself upstairs at Whole Foods eating some soup and salad and watching the storms blow by from the second floor windows.  There is this old cigarette dispenser that has been retrofitted as an art machine – the Art*o*mat.  Pretty cool.  I was trying to decide between Joyce Lyman’s Folk Art Sculpture and “Stick Man – Put together a new friend”, and the Folk Art won because a new friend might turn out to be too needy.  I put in my hard earned dollars, pull the handle, and out slides a groovy alligator in a box.  Don’t be jealous.  Joyce Lyman might make an alligator for you too if you ask nicely…

Bee Cave Sculpture Park

IMG_4771

I visited the Hill Country Galleria Mall this evening in between rain showers, and it turned out that the concert in the Amphitheater was cancelled due to the weather.  So instead of a rock concert, I caught the scene at the Bee Cave Sculpture Park .  It was a wet evening, which made for some interesting photos and then a nice sunset.

Art City Austin

IMG_4532

Another day, another fun festival in Austin.  Today it was Art City Austin where they blocked off a portion of Cesar Chavez Street for artist booths, food trucks, and live music.  The best artist in my opinion was international photographer Greg Davis.  The best food truck was anyone who sold cool, refreshing liquids on this hot day in the street.  The best and most energetic band was Holiday Mountain.  Check out the links if you want to learn more.
