Austin Reggae Festival by Day

IMG_1149

Here is the best plan for attending the Austin Reggae Festival.  Walk in to the festival and do some people watching.  Admire the Austin skyline.  Get as close to the stage as possible.  Check out the band.  Cruise by those dudes with the marijuana flag and the inflatable sofa.  That sofa is perfect!  Go for some food and make friends with the guys working the Crepe Crazy stand.  Order the Chicken Basil Pesto Crepe along with a bottle of Topo Chico. Share a bench with some festival goers and eat dinner.  Wander through the pop-up shops and enjoy the setting sun and those two groovy people who brought a hammock.  Head back to the front of the stage in preparation for the headlining Reggae band from New Zealand.  Snap a photo of the sun as it sets behind the trees that line Auditorium Shores.  Rock out to some Reggae music and then call it a wonderful night.  After all, the festival lasts for three days and you can always come back on Saturday or Sunday.  ðŸ™‚

Honk! TX – South Congress

IMG_1011

Honk! TX is back in town for the weekend!  This is one of my favorite festivals of the year with such good music.  I watched several bands this evening at different locations along South Congress Avenue.  My favorite band tonight was Gora Gora Orkestar from Boulder Colorado.  They were great!

Zilker Kite Festival II

IMG_0775

The Zilker Kite Festival was as crazy as ever!  The weather was a perfect overcast, cloudy, and windy day.  There were tons of people, dogs, kites everywhere, bubbles, a biplane buzzing by, food trucks, beverages, kettle corn, free ice water, t-shirt sales, and art.  I met the artist who submitted the design for the official t-shirt, Aileen Fitzgerald, and she was super nice.  I thought her artwork really captured the spirit of Austin.  All in all, it was a most successful Kite Festival.

Banger’s Oktoberfest

IMG_6268

There is a small Oktoberfest Celebration going on at Banger’s this weekend, so I thought I would stop by for a pint.  They boast to have the largest tap wall in Austin, with over 100 beers on tap.  My choice was a Belgian-style Witbier called “Freetail Rye Wit” from the Freetail Brewing Company in San Antonio.  It was very enjoyable as the sun started to set for the day.

International Music Festival

IMG_5739

I saw four great bands today at the International Music Festival put on by the Texas Music Museum.

  • Indrajit Banerjee and Sri Gourisankar – Indian Music
  • Kunitan – Andean Music
  • Batuque Raiz – Brazilian Music
  • Flying Balalaika Brothers – Russian Music

I was surprised to discover that the two gentlemen playing the sitar and tabla were my favorite music of the afternoon.  You can find them on the Internet and YouTube if you are interested in hearing their music.
